ICON PORTRAITS

“By combining elements of Christian iconography with Alutiiq tradition, the artist suggests that they are equally important. She is asking us to consider traditional Alutiiq beliefs on the same level as Western beliefs.” The Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository, Kodiak, Alaska.

My intention of these paintings is to decolonize, recover lost culture and empower Alaska Native culture and identity by creating new iconic imagery, melding Christian religious imagery with indigenous symbols of spirituality. These portraits are based on my Alaska Native family, friends and artists, influenced by my Catholic upbringing and contain elements of Alaska Native culture including animal spirits, shamanism, tribal spiritual relics, and traditional indigenous design.
