Centuries of artistic representation of Christian religious symbols, archetypes and narratives have settled deep in our collective psyche. The Russian Orthodox church  greatly influenced and repressed the culture of my Alutiiq ancestors. The intention of these paintings is to decolonize, recover lost culture and to add to this collective  by creating new iconic visions and melding Christian religious imagery with indigenous symbols of spirituality. These portraits were based on my Alaska Native family, friends and artists. These Russian icon inspired portraits contain elements of Alaska Native culture including animal spirits, shamanism, tribal spiritual relics, and traditional indigenous design.
