Centuries of artistic representation of Christian religious symbols, archetypes and narratives have settled deep in our collective psyche. The Russian Orthodox church  greatly influenced and repressed the culture of my Alutiiq ancestors of Kodiak Island as the Russian Empire colonized Alaska and made Kodiak the center of their fur trade.

The intention of these paintings is to decolonize, recover lost culture and empower Alaska Native culture and identity by creating new iconic imagery, melding Christian religious imagery with indigenous symbols of spirituality. These Russian icon inspired portraits are based by my Alaska Native family, friends and artists and contain elements of Alaska Native culture including animal spirits, shamanism, tribal spiritual relics, and traditional indigenous design.
